This blog is a holding place for all the fascinating facts about swearing that I come across in my research for my forthcoming book “That’s F*c#ing Amazing: the science and history of swearing.”
I’ve always been fascinated by swearing: why does a part of language still retain the power not just to shock us, but to actually make us feel physically stressed out? Why does swearing help us manage pain? Do other primates swear? Do men swear more than women? Why do some languages have more swearwords than others? Why do people who have had major strokes still retain the ability to swear, even when the rest of their language skills have gone?
Even though nothing seems more childish and frivolous than swearing, it turns out that four-letter-words can reveal a lot about what makes us human!
